MSP Scholars Program Description

While people of color are critically underrepresented in the manufacturing industry as a whole, the manufacturing leaders in the sector partners recognize an even bigger gap in professional roles like engineering. The MSP Scholars Program seeks to help our higher-education partners attract & retain African American students in engineering degree programs. The manufacturers also want to ensure that these students are excited about manufacturing and prepare to be top candidates for professional roles in Northeast Ohio’s manufacturing industry through educational support, quality work-based learning, and social capital development.

Collaboration Between MANY Manufacturers

This program is a collaborative effort between a dozen manufacturing companies in Cuyahoga County. These organizations are committed to the strengthening of manufacturing in our region, as well as increasing Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in the industry as well. The initial idea for this program, as well as the starter funding has come from a range of small, medium, and large manufacturing companies, which offers a diverse range of opportunities to the scholars.

A Community Collaboration

The Manufacturing Leaders knew that they wanted to leverage as much expertise as possible in designing a program to support African American college students pursuing careers in Manufacturing. The intermediary team, under the leadership of Andrew Jackson (CEO, Elsons International) and Doug Lance (President, Cleveland Operations, Lincoln Electric) assembled a steering committee of community stakeholders to shape this work and build a program that could be open for applications in the spring of 2021. Steering committee participants include representatives from the Urban League of Greater Cleveland, The President’s Council, National Society of Black Engineers, Nordson Corporation Foundation, Lubrizol, Rockwell Automation, and the Cuyahoga County Department of Development.

Planned Outcomes

Thanks to the employer members of the Manufacturing Sector Partnership providing seed funding, the MSP Scholars Program will provide a financial award that students can use to offset educational expenses. Equally important though, the MSP Scholars Program will connect students with opportunities to fully experience and fall in love with the Northeast Ohio Manufacturing industry.

Through mentorship connections with industry executives, exclusive work-based learning opportunities with world-class organizations, and unique professional development experiences, students will not simply have a competitive advantage for their first job out of college, but a career that can accelerate them as future manufacturing leaders in the region.

The MSP Scholars Program will accept applications from African American students who are currently enrolled in a post-secondary engineering program, graduating high school seniors who intend to enroll in a post-secondary engineering program, and incumbent workers interested in pursuing an engineering degree to take their career to the next level. Program participation will be renewable through a student’s senior year.
